#331 - Report - 05/11/06 - Paul Akhurst, Ian Emmett, Tom Panagos,

They may have failed in their attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 (visit http://www.bonefire.org/guy/ for some historical English education) but Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators definitely got a result in November 2006! Yesterday’s ride was excellent, all things that a good bike hash should be. Good trail, some technical sections, nasty back checks, a well grouped pack, halfway drinks stop and regroup, all very nicely done. The pack was slightly smaller than we have experienced lately, thirty riders, but this was a social crowd who rode well together. In fact apart from one guest, Richard, everyone else was a member.

In earlier correspondence we had joked about the hares ‘virtual recceing’ their ride, how little did we realise that this was not that far from the truth! In what could be a SBH first, the ride was recced from the air, no not from an airplane but from Google Earth!! Yes, in a somewhat unusual practice Guy Fawkes chose the run site from studying the area on Google Earth, planning his route and then as a last resort physically going out to the area. Yes, it has been established that the hares did visit the area, well at least once, to the best of my knowledge even this technical bunch has not yet mastered the ability to ‘virtually lay paper’, no that part of the hare-ing duties was back to the old tried and tested traditional method – throwing it off your bike as you cycle by!

The Gunung Pulai area is definitely a great place to hash and although it seems, on paper, a long way to go, in practice it was only thirty minutes once we had crossed the Second Link. An area with great potential to be considered for future rides (prospective hares take note – I am sure Guy Fawkes will let you into his Google Earth secrets?).

What should follow a great ride? A great lunch of course and yesterday was no different. An excellent spread saw over eighty percent of the pack make it to the On On in Pekan Nanas, Pekan where I hear you chorus? (a small Malaysian town hiding in the shadow of Gunung Pulai) for all the usual favorites which at fifteen ringgit was an absolute steal.

Our next ride is on the 24th November; yes we are blessed with two excellent rides this month, also promises to be something a little bit special – you will need to be there to discover just why??? and don’t forget the upcoming hash weekend in Sebana Cove, if you have not already done so get your application forms in ASAP.

So much good hashing going on at the moment, you can not afford to miss any of it!

Once again our thanks to Paul, Ian and Tom – three rising hash stars – for an excellent day out.
